APARNA CHAKRAVARTY

EXPLORING LIFE IN ABSTRACTION

ARTIST STATEMENT

My artistic journey is characterized by curiosity and willingness to explore a diverse range of mediums and tools. I want to learn, grow and experiment and this quest for learning is evident in my art practice over the years. I firmly believe in the philosophy that learning has no age limit, and I embody this belief in my practice.

I enjoy exploring a range of styles, from representational to abstract. My art practice explores working with textures and the interplay of textures and colours. My art process can be spontaneous or planned and many a times a mix of both. Although my formal training has been in representational art and illustration, my venture into abstract art has opened up new dimensions of artistic expression and exploration. I am drawn to visual and tactile properties of various materials and I like to put them together and observe how they interact. I like working with layers of diluted colours put on textured surfaces. And this results in surprising patterns and glimpses of layers underneath.

Mixed media on canvas abstract painting titled Coastal Colours 2 by Aparna Chakravarty

COASTAL COLOURS 2

MIXED MEDIA ON CANVAS

152 CM X 122 CM

2025

"Coastal Colours 2" is part of a series of abstract paintings that captures the essence of a serene seashore where the sea, sand, and sky converge. This artwork embodies both dynamism and tranquility, reflecting the ever-changing yet calming nature of the ocean. I am deeply drawn to the ocean, finding inspiration in everything about it—the crashing waves, the soft sand, and the shifting hues of the sea across different times of day and seasons. This painting is my attempt to encapsulate a single fleeting moment from the infinite beauty and inspiration the ocean offers.

Mixed media abstract painting titled Quietude 4 by Aparna Chakravarty

QUIETUDE 4

MIXED MEDIA ON CANVAS

76 CM X 101 CM

2024

The "Quietude" series captures the sense of peace and calm I feel when I gaze at the ocean. This new painting extends the series beyond the ocean. I’ve realized that I feel the same serenity when I look at the vast expanse of the desert, with its rolling sand dunes. The vastness, stillness, and quiet of these places comfort me, evoking a deep sense of quietude.

Acrylic on canvas painting titled The Deep Blue Canvas by Aparna Chakravarty

THE DEEP BLUE CANVAS

MIXED MEDIA ON CANVAS

61 CM X 91 CM

2024

Named by my son, “The Deep Blue Canvas”, this artwork has wispy whites, dark blues and the in-betweens. There are shades of blue, aqua, turquoise and countless hues that emerge from layered, translucent colours. I love the details of this painting where you can see the remnants of the shades underneath a layer.

Mixed media on wooden board abstract painting titled Juxtapose 2 by Aparna Chakravarty

JUXTAPOSE 2

MIXED MEDIA ON WOODEN BOARD

60 CM X 90 CM

2024

Juxtapose series draws parallels with life. Like life, where conflicting things are thrown together and at us, this artwork has the swirls and the cracks, the smooth and the rough thrown together. The luscious swirls co-existing with the jagged edges.

QUIETUDE 1

ACRYLIC ON CANVAS

76 CM X 76 CM

2023

“Quietude 1” is part of a series that I have started, aiming to encapsulate the tranquil essence of the ocean. Spending countless hours observing its ever-changing hues, the calming symphony of ocean sounds inspired me. I’ve tried to convey the serenity through the undulating lines and calming colours, intending to evoke a sense of peace and harmony for those who view the artwork.
